Wetlands are areas of land that are covered by water. They can be covered by salt water, fresh water or somewhere in between. Wetland ecosystems benefit people, plants and animals in several ways. Here are just a few of the benefits:
- Increase water quality
- Provide food and shelter for wildlife
- Provide protection against flood damage
- Reduce air pollution
- Promote biodiversity
The United States has lost about half of its wetlands in the past 200 years. The losses are greatest in the state of Louisiana, where an area about the size of Delaware has been lost since the 1930s.
With World Wetlands Day coming up on February 2nd, we wanted to remind you that wetlands are an incredible habitat for wildlife and plants, and provide endless benefits to humans as well. So, now’s the time to educate your children, friends and neighbors about the speed at which we are losing these extraordinary ecosystems, and discuss how you can become an advocate for protecting them. Remember, protecting these areas not only helps plants and animals that can’t help themselves but also provides and protects important resources for people too.
Check out the activities for your children and start the conversation!
