From sundown-to-sundown, starting March 5th to the 6th is National Day of Unplugging. This is a great opportunity to disconnect from the virtual world that runs our daily lives. It’s important to refresh your body and mind by choosing to spend more time with family and friends enjoying the outdoors, especially in our increasingly virtual world. This 24-hour break promotes healthier lives by simply reminding ourselves to be present in each moment. This project began in 2009 as a small group of people gathering for tech-free Shabbat dinners and has turned into thousands participating in world-wide unplugged events each year. You can join this initiative by putting away your devices and finding other fun things to occupy the day.
So, how should you spend your day? You can…
- Go for a walk outside
- Read a good book
- Paint!
- Play board games with friends or family
- Have a picnic
- Watch the sunset
- Climb the biggest hill you can see
- Start a gardening project
- Go on a scavenger hunt
- Cook a meal you’ve never eaten before
- Hang out in the grass
- And so many other activities!
Spending time in nature is also beneficial to your mental health. So find some new trails or parks to visit, and spend some time focusing on the world around you. Several Harvard studies have proven that spending more time outside will boost your vitamin D levels, improve concentration, allow you to heal faster, and overall make you happier. So in a world of technology, we hope you join us on March 5th and take a chance to unplug and see what the world has to offer!
