This March 3rd, take an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of a diverse and flourishing world by celebrating World Wildlife Day. Wildlife is such an important part of our global ecosystem and is all around us whether we realize it or not. In order to observe wildlife, you do not have to be surrounded by nature. Wildlife lives in the birds you see in the sky, the cat that lives on your block, or even in the flowers that bloom in your backyard! It is everywhere that we look and live.
Since wildlife is all around us, it’s important to take steps to make sure that we are taking proper care of these living things. There are many easy steps that you can take to make sure that you are helping to conserve and protect wildlife.
Some things that you can do are…
- Plant native plants in your garden or lawn
- Pick up and throw away litter when you see it
- Reuse or recycle things that you own
- Turn off your lights at night
- Avoid the use of pesticides and other harmful chemicals
- Drive slow in areas where animals live to avoid collisions
- Sign petitions against animal cruelty
- Spread the word on social media
- Start a compost pile
- Visit national parks and nature reserves in your area!
So, because of how important wildlife is to the health and beauty of our planet, take this World Wildlife Day to go and observe the wildlife that lives near you! Visit the Sankofa Wetland Park and Nature Trail to see the amazing birds, fish, plants, and other wildlife that lives there.
Additionally, check out the Urban Naturalist Scavenger hunt posted under the activities section of our website to see what wildlife you can find!
